The Hightman Insurance Agency was started in 1953 by Arthur Hightman. He was working full-time at Art retired from Ft Detrick in 1974. In 1977 his son Daryl decided to carry on the “Family Tradition” and became a licensed agent working along side his father. Together they continued to provide quality products and outstanding service to their growing clientele. They were able to keep working the business out of their home. The clients liked the personalization they felt when Art sat them down at his dining room table to review their coverages or sell them life insurance. In 1987 Daryl married Twanna Keller, a local girl from another old Middletown family. She decided to join the “Family Tradition” and started working along side both Daryl and Art. Art was ready to retire in 1991 after 38 years of dedication, and faithfully serving his community. Twanna and Daryl took over the agency and moved its location to their home on Valley View Road in Middletown. This is where it still is today, serving the community and providing clients with quality products and outstanding service, carrying on the Hightman Family Tradition.

Ft Detrick in Frederick. Months earlier, Art answered an ad in the local newspaper, “Work Part-Time Make Extra Money” representing an insurance company. One day he was outside tending his garden when a stranger approached. The stranger said “I’m here about some insurance.” Art replied just like we do today “I have enough insurance, I don’t need any more.” The stranger was Frank Yarin, an ERIE Insurance representative. He was looking for new ERIE agents in Maryland. Well, as they say, the rest is history. Arthur Hightman became one of the first appointed ERIE Agents in Maryland. He soon found out that he didn’t have nearly enough insurance, and his first client was himself. He worked out of his house at 323 S Church Street in Middletown. While he worked full-time at Ft Detrick, his wife Sarah took calls during the day and helped service the accounts. When Art came home from his day job, he started working the insurance business. He truly believed in ERIE Insurance and their way of doing business. One of ERIE’s mottos’ is “To provide our Policyholders with as near perfect protection, as near perfect service, as is humanly possible, and to do so at the lowest possible cost.”
